Small Brook & a Big Rainbow May 6 2013

We went to a small brook to try for some nice native brook trout that Mia and I had seen swimming here in the fall. We tried a new hole far up the stream from the Connecticut River. As we began fishing the back of the first pool, I noticed a fish rising regularly further up stream in the current. Mia moved up towards a fish with the 3wt Bamboo rod. Her cast was perfect with just the leader in front of the fish.

There was a brief rise in the current as we saw the back of the trout roll out of the water and then down. The line went with him! She set the hook and it was on! and it was big! a big beautiful rainbow was the max that the the 3 weight bamboo rod could handle.

I was obviously over excited and wanted to make sure she let the fish run! and she did, the fish ran out the line three or four times before I got my cell phone out to tape it. Mia fought him well and kept the fish on the line until I could lift him from the water for a few pictures.

I have no idea how this fish had made it up this stream, past some significant waterfalls and gotten so large. It was quite a special catch. Its amazing how such strong wild things can find a way to persist so well.

Then I placed him back in his pool to return to eating caddis flies.
